While the winds were reaching their peak, Hand in Hand USA and Kriya Yoga Institute were already beginning the collection of relief funds. This email was sent on May 4, 2019:
Dear Divine Ones,
We want to inform you that Cyclone Fani has slammed into the Northeast Coast of India, at the city of Puri in Odisha, on Friday morning at 8:00 am local time. Cyclone Fani, equivalent to a category 4 hurricane (with winds up to 250 km/hr (155 mph)), is the strongest cyclone to hit the region in 20 years. More than 1 million people have been evacuated from the eastern state of Odisha. Odisha is also home to Hariharananda Gurukulam in Balaghai, and Balashram in Arua.
While the storm is expected to continue until 17:30 local time, we can report that
*
at the Hariharananda Gurukulam in Balighai people are safe; but there is significant loss of property, almost all the trees were uprooted, and minor injuries to cows and calves.
*
at Balashram in Arua, all the children, teachers, staff, and residents are safe. But there is structural damage to the roofs of the buildings, trees are uprooted, and some construction materials for the school auditorium project have blown away.
Elsewhere in Odisha, one of India’s poorest states, flooding has been reported and forecasters say a storm surge of 1.5m (5ft) could threaten low-lying homes.
In the past, Hand in Hand USA has sent funds so that food, water, clothing and shelter can be provided to the people who are affected. It is one of HIH USA’s missions to support local relief agencies in times of natural disasters.
Please consider making a donation to fund relief work that will be carried out by volunteers in Puri.
Donations can be made online through a link in a followup email that will be provided shortly to update everyone on the situation in Odisha, or checks can be mailed to:

For checks payable to: Hand in Hand USA. Please write “Cyclone Fani” on memo of check.
Thank you for your generosity, and let us be thankful to God that while there is significant damage to property and vegetation, most are safe from the effects of this terrific cyclone.
